Introduction
Beijing Inside-Out Residency is an interdisciplinary program established by the Beijing Inside-Out Art Museum from its inception, inviting artists, curators, writers, scholars, and researchers from across the world to live and create in the museum’s residency studio. Often closely aligned with the museum’s exhibitions and public activities, the residency program calls for artists from China and internationally, as well as practitioners from different roles in the art community and the academic world, encouraging them to deepen their own creative thinking by joining the residency, and to engage in an active dialogue with the local art ecosystem and the intellectual community. At the same time, we expect participants in residency to join our internal discussions and training programs (often with the participation of the museum team and other art practitioners living in Beijing), and to present their research or work during the residency in the form of lectures, publishing on social media platforms, and open studios.
Residence Space
The Inside-Out Residency Studio is located on the second floor of the Artist Workshop in the Beijing Inside-Out Art District. Nestled at the foot of Beijing’s western mountains, the art district is a serene environment conducive to creative work. It is just a few kilometers away from beautiful natural sites such as the Beijing Botanical Garden, Xiangshan, Yongding River, and Mentougou. Several Chinese artists also maintain long-term studios in this area, and the Inside-Out Art Museum is within walking distance.
We Provide
· The Inside-Out Residency Program offers a platform for artists, providing studios and accommodation tailored to meet the specific needs of each artist. Inspired by the Cite Internationale des Arts in Paris, the residency has separate spaces for work and living on two levels, ensuring a private yet open atmosphere for visiting artists.
· We cover transportation costs from the station to the studio on the first and last days of the residency, along with local information for daily living.
· Basic living facilities, including art materials, a kitchen, free Wi-Fi, air conditioning, and bedding, are available within the space (for more details, see the specific introduction).
· During the residency, artists have opportunities to visit major art institutions and alternative spaces in Beijing as needed, enhancing their network. They can also receive professional advice, participate in internal discussions, and engage in studio open days or small public exhibitions.
Who Can Apply
The Inside-Out Residency welcomes applications from artists and researchers of diverse backgrounds, regardless of age, gender, or nationality.
