Studio projects is a talk about the consequences of my working attitude in the studio and what influences it or sets direction. I will start from my personal perspective to address development of my art and what it means for me being a studio artist. I will try to explain how I came to this critical point of my art and why I had to reset my studio practice at a certain moment. Certain aspects of art practice will be mentioned: the materials versus the ideas, the problem of judgement and the need of knowing an exact position of the status of the works.
This talk revolves around the doubts and questions I have, especially the question if a work of art can ever be finished and even pushed to the limit: can I curate a work in order to give it a position in the on-going time and history or can a work be on it’s own?
Furthermore, I will try to sketch the Dutch art and social context and the impact it has on my artistic development.
I would also like to share my interest in the historical modern painting and the need to have it embedded in my work. I have been exploring the liabilities of the painting process and the openness of the process in my practice, presenting its transparency and therefore uncertainty or even inability to speak as one voice.
Finally, I will try to give an idea of the context, in which an artwork is to be seen and why I ask myself the question every day: Is it possible to finish a work of art? What does this question imply and on what basis can I continue to do something at all as an artist or painter?
Paul Drissen was born in Oirsbeek, The Netherlands in 1963. He lives and works in Maastricht NL. He had his bachelor study in art education, HKL Sittard NL from 1982 to 1985, he studied for Master of Fine Arts and Crafts, Academy of Fine Arts Maastricht NL from 1985 to 1989. From 1989 to 1991, he had De Ateliers post graduate studies in Haarlem / Amsterdam NL.
Paul Drissen has had museum solo exhibitions at the Bonnefantenmuseum Maastricht  and Marres , Schunck Heerlen  and gallery solo’s at Greta Meert Brussels , Art&Project [1991/1993/1995/1997] and Slewe Amsterdam [1999/2004/2007/2010/2013/2016].
